Seafarers Contracts

Members are covered for only those damages mentioned in the crew contracts. It is advisable for members to have their current crew contracts vetted by the club who can then advice them on any amendments or changes that may be required.

Pre Employment Medicals

It is an international fact that crew illness continue to be a major cost for the ship owners which ultimately is passed on to the club.

One single serious illness could run into hundreds of thousands of dollars caused by vessel deviation, Transfer of patient, resultant hospitalization, medical treatment and other related expenses.

In hindsight, it has been studied that many of these claims could have been avoided if the members took precautions in conducting a detailed pre employment medical examination in a reputed medical clinic.

A few guidelines attached should assist members to review their current pre medical policy.

Pre-Medical Checklist

  • Is the clinic recognised by and/or associated with a statutory body.
  • Is the clinic covered by health & safety regulations for both candidates and staff.
  • Does the clinic already undertake pre-employment medicals for seafarers, How many pre-employment medicals are currently completed on a daily basis.
  • Is the clinic owned and managed by a medical practitioner.
  • Does the clinic have fully qualified doctors and are they employed on a full time basis who understands the nature of seafarer’s work.
  • If the screening includes specific examinations –  are the results of all examinations and investigations computerised and retained on a PC database for a minimum of 5 years.
  • Where the examining doctor is in doubt does the clinic have a method of referral to medical specialists.
  • What is the annual expenditure on new equipment and is equipment regularly calibrated.
  • Does the clinic have complete facilities to conduct the complete medical tests.
  • Does the clinic have an existing cost structure for medical examinations.

  • Review of past medical history with appropriate declaration discussed with doctor, agreed and signed by candidate.

Anti malarial injections and instructions is recommended for all seafarers for the taking of appropriate medication throughout the term of the contract.

The concerned patient should then be treated at his own cost and then declared fit for sea service.
